We awoke to another stunning day deep inside the Northeast Greenland National Park where we explored the small, green valley of Rendalen. Surrounded by the steep peaks of Andrée Land grazed several small groups of muskoxen, and most everybody managed a good look at those fascinating creatures of the High North.
During and after a well-received hamburger lunch, we sailed further into Kejser Franz Josef Fjord. This was East Greenland at its best, with steep mountain walls dropping (sometimes more than 2000m / 6000 ft) straight into the narrow, deep fjord glittering with icebergs of all forms and sizes, sometimes much bigger than our lovely National Geographic Endurance.
During the afternoon we explored the fjord from water level. Some went out in Zodiacs, some chose kayaking, and all enjoyed the amazing views of icebergs and glacier tongues coming down from the Greenland ice sheet. The day was rounded off by a ship cruise of the Antarctic Sound which, once again, amazed us with the coloration and patterns of its steep mountainsides. It was like sailing through an art gallery made for and by giants!
