We began the day by finishing our crossing from the South Sandwich Islands to South Georgia. What started as a foggy day continued to clear as the day progressed. When we caught sight of the Nobby Rock, southeast of South Georgia, our day began in earnest. We soon spotted southern right whales, blue whales, fin whales and dozens of humpback whales. Hundreds of flying prions escorted our ship to land, and large albatrosses made several appearances. Due to the weather, we made a quick change of plans and decided on a sunset landing at Gold Harbour in South Georgia. King penguins greeted us—our first sighting!—and we enjoyed a glorious stroll along the beach as the sun descended. Quite the incredible day!
