Genovesa Island
When we awoke this morning we had a lot of hope in our minds and hearts. We were off to explore Genovesa Island, a genuine small jewel in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Fortunately, the exquisite paradise fulfilled our most demanding expectations of the day.
The bird wildlife of Genovesa is not only beautiful, but amazing. In only 5.4 square miles the island hosts an incredible concentration of birds. It is estimated that more than one million birds inhabit the island. Red-footed boobies, frigate birds, and swallow-tailed gulls, among other species, were admired and photographed avidly today. Our snorkeling experience was equally spectacular since we had the unique opportunity to explore a huge submerged caldera. This caldera is so large that the Polaris anchors inside of it.
In addition to these wonderful natural history details, we want to add how rewarding and inspirational family trips can be. They are a real delight to the spirit. The wonders of curiosity and discovery colliding with the joy of our younger guests make a remarkable combination.
To top the day off, one of our younger guests hosted an auction to raise funds for the Galápagos Conservation Fund. It is a primary aim of family expeditions to support our younger guests in not only the exploration of a remarkable part of the world, but in understanding that they can give back to the environment they have been exploring. The prize item was a one-of-a-kind Galápagos mural outlined by Carlos Romero, which many of the children and youth on board had been painting over the past several days. After a dynamic and highly emotional live auction, $1860 was the final bid. Needless to say, all guests and staff were thrilled! Congratulations and many thanks to the final bidder and to the incredible artists who made the mural such a masterpiece.
