Floreana Island
Today was another amazing day in Galápagos. We started the morning off snorkeling in the deep, clear waters off of Champion Island. The current carried us by a vast array of fish, intricate rock and coral formations, a few elusive white-tipped reef sharks, and gave us a look into an astoundingly colorful and pristine marine ecosystem. We ended up in a peaceful bay where a group of sea lions included us in their playful games. The Zodiacs then brought us back to the ship where a well-deserved lunch soon awaited us.
We spent the afternoon exploring and relaxing on the glistening olivine beach of Punta Cormorant. And despite the cloudy skies and occasional drizzle, it was still an absolutely wonderful way to spend the afternoon. Some of us even caught a glimpse of a few Galápagos penguins swimming by the shoreline. After spending an enjoyable hour on the beach, we followed a trail that led us to our first sightings of the vividly colored Galápagos flamingoes, some eating and some nesting in their quiet salt pond. We then found ourselves on a second beach, this one stunningly white and majestic. We were lucky enough to stumble across a group of rays feeding in the shallow water off the beach. We then looked beyond the waves and towards the sky, where the clouds were breaking to give us a sunset so beautiful it could only be seen in Galápagos, one of the most wondrous places on earth.
