Floreana Island

So many different things we heard about Floreana before we arrived to this mysterious Island. Our adventure started by visiting the famous Post Office Bay and to continue the tradition of picking up mail to be hand-delivered it. After the barrel we went to “la Loberia” (or sea lions colony) for a beautiful Zodiac ride to observe marine iguanas, frigates, Galápagos sea lions, mangroves and Opuntia cactus trees. The sun was shining, the color of the water was fantastic and after a delicious breakfast, we repositioned the ship to Champion Island. Here we enjoyed a wonderful snorkeling and a panga ride around the island to look for the endemic Floreana mockingbird.

Later in the afternoon at Punta Cormorant, the beautiful flamingos were the highlight of the visit. There were so many flamingoes gathered in a rather small brackish lagoon and the real treat was to see them very close! This colorful and beloved bird is a subspecies of the greater flamingo. The small population of flamingos in Galápagos makes them a vulnerable species that needs special protection. Beyond the flamingoes’ lagoon, we saw a marvelous white sandy beach where we observed many sting rays hidden in the sand. The sunset marked the moment to go back aboard. When you love natural world, the extraordinary sightings and fantastic snorkeling sites in Floreana made of this island a memorable place to remember. Special moments like these are both very touching and unforgettable!
