Mist and golden light greeted us on a calm and sleepy morning along the British Columbian coast. Anchoring in Pruth Bay, we ventured via Zodiac to nearby Hakai Institute nestled amongst old growth red cedars. We spent the morning exploring the sandy beaches and trails on the island’s west side, enjoying epic views of the Pacific Ocean and some marvelous intertidal life.
We returned to the institute in the afternoon for a full tour of the research center’s facilities. Originally built as a fishing lodge, the institute now specializes in long-term ecological projects and has a large solar panel array and impressive garden and greenhouse. Exploring these off-grid homesteads and learning about the simple beauties and challenges that come with living in these wild places, is always a highlight of these Inside Passage itineraries.
National Geographic Sea Lion continues north tonight, weaving through the beautiful Great Bear rainforest on its way toward Haida Gwaii.
