Malta Pre-Voyage Extension

Island Crossroads in the Heart of the Mediterranean
Nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, the small but fascinating island nation of Malta is steeped in prehistoric history, fortified cities and idyllic fishing villages which you’ll discover on this three-day pre-voyage extension. Begin in the stunning UNESCO-listed city of Valletta to explore unique landmarks in and outside of Malta’s capital—from Birgu’s medieval Fort St Angelo with its spectacular panoramic views to ancient Zurrieq where you’ll sail among a series of towering sea caves on a boat tour.
Day 2 - Valletta, Malta

Arrive in Valletta and check into The Phoenicia Malta, one of Malta’s most iconic hotels. Spend the rest of the day at your leisure, enjoying the hotel’s exquisite amenities or exploring the charming streets of Valletta on your own.

Day 3 - Valletta / Birgu

Travel through history as you discover two of Malta’s storied cities. Accompanied by a local guide, take a traditional dghajsa water taxi to Birgu, one of Malta’s historic Three Cities. Wander among its fortified walls and narrow streets and learn about its rich maritime heritage. Explore Fort St. Angelo, a formidable stronghold that played a crucial role in the Great Siege of 1565, a significant war in the Ottoman Empire’s history. Enjoy breathtaking panoramic views and delve into Malta’s military past through its well-preserved fortifications and exhibits. Savor a typical Maltese lunch at a local restaurant before returning to Valletta for an afternoon at your leisure. Enjoy dinner this evening at local restaurant. (B,L,D)

Then take a scenic drive through Malta’s countryside before reaching one of the island’s largest natural harbors, Marsaxlokk. Enjoy this fishing village with its colorful fishing boats, known locally as luzzu. Take some free time to absorb the atmosphere of this lovely village.

Lunch will be at a palace: the fantastic Palazzo Parisio, in the heart of picturesque Naxxar. This 18th-century place is a trove of artifacts and also a stately home.

Then drive to Malta’s old capital, Mdina, a walled medieval city that’s been inhabited for thousands of years. Much of the architecture dates from the Norman and Baroque periods. Walk through the city's streets and enjoy the fantastic view from the bastions. See the outside of the impressive Mdina Cathedral before the short drive to Mosta. Mosta’s dome is the fourth-largest unsupported dome in the world. During World War II, a bomb pierced the dome and landed, unexploded, in the church. Return to our hotel. Dinner is on your own this evening. (B,L)

Day 4 - Valletta / Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples / Marsaxlokk / Birzebbugia / Embark Ship
