pygmy owl

We had an unbelievable sighting today. A ferruginous pygmy owl was spotted by skiff driver Primo, who has an innate and amazing power to locate wildlife. It was extraordinary! I took the best picture I have ever taken of this rarely seen, minuscule owl species. —Carlos Romero Franco, Expedition Leader

Bigge Island, Australia

Kimberley Expedition: Australia’s Wild Northwest, July 13, 2023

two women photographing a cave

The tide determines a lot here, and we had a very small window to visit Cathedral Cave. We headed off after lunch to see the natural sandstone cave with different weathering patterns that expose the white stone as well as the coloured parts. We admired red through iron oxide, green and black from different algae, and shades of yellow. —Birgit Aikman, Cultural Specialist

kayaks moored on the beach

After a nourishing lunch back onboard the ship, we set off for our afternoon activities on George Island. During World War II, this place was used as a lookout spot to the open ocean, and an 18-ton steel gun is still mounted on the island. Some explored beautiful Granite Cove on kayaks and paddle boards, while others set off into the beautiful forests of the island. —Chelsea Mayer, Naturalist/Certified Photo Instructor

dozens of black and white birds

The afternoon was spent with a Zodiac cruise at gorgeous Alkefjellet, and it was teeming with life! About 100,000 Brunnich’s guillemots filled the sky and the cliffs, making it difficult to get your voice heard at times. —Anne Hedlund, Undersea Specialist

Nauta Creek, Peru

reflection of tree in water

This reserve is known as the “jungle of mirrors” for the incredible reflections you can see in the still blackwater creeks and rivers. Nauta Creek at sunset was no exception! —Gemina Garland-Lewis, Naturalist/Certified Photo Instructor

Reine, Norway

Norway's Fjords and Arctic Svalbard, July 22, 2023

small town bordering a lake

After tying up at the dock, we set out to explore Reine, known as the cod capital of Norway and centrally located in the Lofoten archipelago. The whole landscape was truly like a postcard: towering granite mountains above town, blue skies, calm seas, and puffy clouds. This was a great place for a photo walk, and it offered a great introduction to this wonderful archipelago.

small brown bird with long bill

I had the joy to capture, for the first time, a picture of the rarely photographed tody-flycatcher. This small bird is very skittish and moves swiftly. —Carlos Romero, Expedition Leader
