One World, One Ocean: Celebrating Our Blue Planet
When you think of the ocean, you probably think of five different bodies of water: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and Southern (that last one, which surrounds Antarctica, was the newest to be recognized by the International Hydrographic Organization in 2000). But despite disparate names and locations on the global map, today scientists speak about the ocean, singular. All five are interconnected—and so are the ecosystems and creatures that coexist within them—which makes it all the more important to protect and conserve every part of our one big, beautiful ocean. The ocean is where we go for recreation, relaxation, reflection, and exploration. It provides us with food, fun, jobs, and the majority of the oxygen we breathe—and it is worth celebrating every day of the year. Read on for more wondrous facts about the deep blue sea.
