When Art Meets Ice: Change Aboard National Geographic Endurance

Change, the first-ever permanent polar art exhibit, teems with thought-provoking works—large-scale paintings, interactive sculptures, rare archival photos, haunting soundscapes, and much more. Displayed throughout the brand-new National Geographic Endurance, Change explores key themes to give guests a richer understanding of polar geographies. Artist Zaria Forman, the exhibit’s curator, has assembled an incredible roster of artists. She has been highlighting their work on Instagram where you can get a sense of what awaits once our ship is able to set sail. Below are just a few of the contributing artists. Luke ReynoldsFlight Data (On a Wednesday Afternoon)

🎶 SOUND ON 🎶 Luke Reynolds (@lukereynoldsmusic ): “I used data sonification in this song to demonstrate the high level of air traffic over Iceland, which is linked to roughly ⅓ of all of the countries C02 emissions. I began by collecting an hour’s worth of flight data over Iceland. I then compressed the data into 60 seconds and assigned various musical parameters to the aircraft size and altitude. Each note represents one aircraft. Musical notes appear in the order of planes passing over Iceland on Wednesday afternoon, October 20, 2019, between 4:12PM and 5:12PM. Altitude is represented by volume: the higher the plane, the quieter the note and the lower the plane, the louder the note. Low to high musical notes correlate to aircraft size (large to small). My data source was a Swedish based internet service Flight Radar 24, that shows real-time commercial aircraft flight information. Anders BerthelsenPhotographs — Nuuk, Greenland

Anders Berthelsen is a Greenlandic filmmaker and photographer, born and raised in Nuuk, Greenland. His latest project documents the diverse community living in Nuuk: “Nuuk is one of the smallest capitals in the world with only 17,000 people but it is a fast growing, multicultural, and vibrant city with a lot happening all around!” His work is exhibited on Deck 5 of the #NationalGeographicEndurance, which has the theme ‘Capturing the Imagination: Exploration and Enchantment.’ Curator @zarialynn : “Humans are natural explorers. There are so many reasons why we are drawn to visit polar regions, both physically and in our imaginations. There is the obvious draw of adventure and personal conquest; of testing our mettle amid unforgiving conditions. There is also the search for knowledge, in which we seek to better understand the planet we all share—and therefore, better understand ourselves. And there is the desire to escape from reality, to enter a terrain that is easy to describe as fantastical and otherworldly, even though it is, ironically, as "worldly" as it gets. This work created for “Change” is part of a collaborative series of Lenticulars by @dianeburko and Anna Tas. In response to Diane’s on-site investigations in the polar regions, ”These images invite the viewer to engage in moving images that evoke the fluid experience of nature. Todd Murphy (@toddmurphy101 ) embodied the inquisitiveness of a 19th century Naturalist, and travelled to the far reaches of the world, collecting, photographing, and fastidiously cataloging everything from melting glaciers, to aviary species, to exotic fruit. His photographic studies of curiosities become sources for complex narratives based on philosophy, mythology, and the supernatural. Tiffany Bozic (@t.bozic ): “Pulsing ctenophores and siphonophores adapt in a rapidly changing Arctic sea to catch drifting zooplankton in their long tentacles. One of the most common jellyfish in the Arctic is the small bell shaped hydrozoan named Aglantha digitale (center top). Light refracts off the comb-rows of the ctenophore Mertensia ovum (bottom left) producing stripes of rainbow color. The Hula skirt siphonophore Physophora hydrostatica (top left) is a colonial animal, with powerful stinging tentacles that can grow up to 41 cm. Marina Zurkow (@squirrelzurkow ): “The Elixir series describe impossible landscapes: cut-crystal bottles bob and toss like buoys in the ocean, beacons bearing potions, poisons, messages, genies. Each bottle contains an animated figure engaged in a repeated, metronomic action. In “Elixir IV” a high diver twists and arcs while the bottle presses forward in an Antarctic landscape. From small shrimp to blue whales, reindeer to orcas, mosquitoes, penguins, snow buntings, Arctic hare, Bowhead whale, Arctic char, wolf, Arctic Fox, common Murre, musk ox, and many others. The theme of much of my work is about interconnectedness in nature. Every animal in an ecosystem affects everything else, nature is a web, a reticulate interconnected system.
