Today was our first full day aboard National Geographic Explorer. We left our port at Puerto Natales and made our way through the White Narrows to see Bernal Glacier. Along the way, we admired wind-worn forests shaped by the region’s powerful gusts, spotted Andean condors soaring above us, and took in the majestic glacier up close.

National Geographic Explorer
Agostini Fjord, Chile
After cruising to the end of Sino Agostini for an early morning look at a glacier, National Geographic Explorer anchored just offshore of the Aguila Glacier so guests could shuttle ashore for some hikes in its direction. Once again, we were accompanied by some rain, but the winds were calm, and our rain gear kept us dry. Walking along the edge of this forest so full of vegetation was a reminder that this region of Patagonia is practically a temperate rain forest with a mix of coniferous trees and a thick understory of grasses and deciduous plants. After lunch, we moved a short distance over to Punta Baja and enjoyed an afternoon of Zodiac cruising near the Navarro Glacier. After getting some photos of the glacier, it was a wonderful surprise to pull up to the “Cocoa Boat”, a Zodiac with the ship’s bartender and hotel staff serving hot chocolate, offered with a little extra spike if one so desired! It was a great way to end the day.
