Upon opening our windows and portholes this morning we were treated to the amazing views of Tracy Arm. Icebergs dotted the water beneath sheer rock walls. In Zodiacs, we moved even closer to South Sawyer Glacier. Mountain goats watched from above as we slowly picked our way through the ice, approaching closer and closer to the face of the glacier. The massive icebergs constantly moved and shifted around us, pushed and pulled by the currents, tides, and winds. We observed hundreds of harbor seals hauled-out, using the flatter bergs as floating beds to rest and warm up.
After lunch, some adventurous souls dared to jump into the ice-filled water, while the rest of us cheered them on from the bow of National Geographic Quest. Their shocked faces, excited shouts, and quick exits from the water conveyed just how cold it was.
In the afternoon we cruised out of Tracy Arm, stopping at a waterfall nicknamed Hole-In-The-Wall. We then proceeded through Holkham Bay, and out into the wide waters of Stephens Passage. The weather continued to favor us for our last evening, with calm seas and clear skies.
