It was a rare treat to get to wake up in the South Sandwich Islands. This remote island chain is made up of volcanic islands, some of which are still very active. Despite the strong winds and large waves, we disembarked the ship in the morning for an adventurous Zodiac cruise. The shoreline was filled with Antarctic fur seals and penguins. Several penguins came to greet us in the water.

The Undersea Team dropped the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) into the water and explored the sea floor over 550 feet down! The afternoon was spent spotting wildlife and sailing past more of these rarely visited islands. We even had the amazing opportunity to see a blue whale! Though challenging, these islands are well worth the effort to visit!
