We awakened aboard the National Geographic Sea Lion to a cloudy, breezy 57 degrees Fahrenheit. In stepping outside, I noticed a definite warmer feel to the air… we had left behind the cooler, northern Pacific Northwest climate for milder, southern portion. Our focus today was a more relaxed pace of cruising the coastline south to San Juan Island’s Friday Harbor to re-enter the US. During the day, people spent time outside watching the scenery go by, in cabins gathering their belongings together, editing photos, and enjoying the company of fellow shipmates.
We also had a few talks in the lounge. In the morning our photo instructor led a discussion on how to organize and edit the tens of thousands of photos that were taken during the voyage. And in the afternoon, our National Geographic photographer shared some of her more personal artistic photography with us.
In the early evening we arrived at Friday Harbor and were welcomed back to the US by our friendly Customs officials. Shortly after, we had our last recap including photo slideshow, followed by a delicious Captain’s Farewell dinner. After dinner many people disembarked to stretch their legs along the docks and streets of Friday Harbor.
What an amazing journey we’ve had, from the majestic wildness of Southeast Alaska to the beauty and richness of the native people’s cultures as we made our way south. And then tomorrow morning – BAM! Arrival in downtown Seattle. I know the experiences we’ve had onboard will stay in our minds and hearts for some time to come.
