On our sixth day of “Exploring Alaska’s Coastal Wilderness” we woke as our ship, National Geographic Quest, entered Wrangell Narrows and docked in the small and charming fishing village of Petersburg on Mitkof Island. Guests were greeted with one of the lowest tides of the year, which exposed over 17 feet of intertidal zone.
Guests began their morning activities in comfortable weather. Options for activities were many, including Zodiac tours of the harbor with interpretation of the fisheries, a guided hike of the muskeg (bog) on neighboring Kupreanof Island, a cultural walk led by a member of the Tlingit people, a bicycle ride around Petersburg, self-guided walks into town, and a photo walk with photographer Lisa Hornak.
Before dinner this evening, Tlingit Leader Will Ware joined us on board for a lovely talk about his culture.
As soon as we left the harbor, we were greeted by several killer whales! We observed them for almost an hour, before we headed to the dining room for a Dungeness crab feast!
