A calmer morning greeted us after a bumpy evening. Winds had picked up, so we adjusted plans to make the most of our day. After breakfast Joselyn gave a talk sharing some “Secrets of Survival” from the plant world —showing how we can learn about our environment by learning to “read” the plants around us. Next our National Geographic Photographer Camille Seaman entranced us with a presentation; she shared the very personal story of her journey to where she is today and where her future sights are set. During this time the ship repositioned to spend the afternoon at the spectacular Walker Cove. There we enjoyed incredible scenery with waterfalls, steep glacier-carved walls, salmon streams, and peaceful almost-glassy water conditions. Kayakers, standup paddleboarders, and Zodiac cruisers all got their fill. The Global Explorers even got the chance to earn their Zodiac driving licenses… and then it was all-hands-on-deck for an Alaskan polar plunge! What an incredible final afternoon — we truly packed it all in, including a rare full transit of the entire Behm Canal!

Ideal Cove and Thomas Bay
An authentic Alaskan experience includes rain; today, we had an authentic experience for twenty-four hours straight. Our morning hikes took us through a stunning temperate rainforest, made possible by the liquid sunshine that characterizes this region. Everything dripped, and waterfalls increased in volume by the hour. The afternoon included a watercolor session led by Kimberly Wood, and a presentation on whales by Erica Wirth. Five intrepid guests signed up for a Zodiac tour in the continuous downpour, and their bravery was rewarded — they saw at least fifteen bald eagles, nosed up a creek, waved to curious harbor seals, and viewed National Geographic Sea Lion amidst literal mist. Rain creates this place, and today we soaked up that reality.

Wrangell
Today guests enjoyed an awesome day in the town of Wrangell. Groups split up for different activities including hiking Mount Dewey, e-biking, visiting Chief Shakes for a cultural experience, exploring petroglyph beach, and visiting the bears at Anan. The group who went to Anan also saw killer whales along the way, and a mink eating salmon. They wrapped up the day with recaps, dinner, and a geological presentation.
