National Geographic Sea Lion cruised Misty Fjords National Monument, passing through Rudyerd Bay and Behm Canal in the early hours. Guests took in dramatic views of a deep and extraordinary fjord carved by glaciers thousands of years ago during and after the last glacial maximum; we also spotted a brown bear with cubs along the shoreline. During morning operations guests enthusiastically jumped into kayaks for a paddle in God’s Pocket, deep amongst towering cliffs of granite, some over 3,000 feet high. After lunch, guests boarded Zodiacs for cruises where they spotted several juvenile and adult bald eagles, harbor seals, sea otters, kingfishers, and harlequin ducks. The epic first day ended with cocktails, recap, and dinner, followed by an evening presentation “Why Feathers are Phenomenal” by Naturalist and Raptor Expert Zoey Greenburg.
