A new day on our Sea Cloud adventure started with a grayish sky, but the weather was still much calmer and better than the storm of the previous night. Despite the gray sky, however, the morning was dry with only a few drops of rain. As on the day before, the ship’s sails were unfurled so that we were all able to enjoy the peace and tranquility of sailing without motors on our way to Korčula.
The most interesting part of the morning was a presentation given by Rebecca Ingram about the history of the great Republic of Venice. It was a fitting introduction to Korčula, as Korčula is one of many Croatian islands that spent several centuries under Venetian rule. After the presentation, the Sea Cloud boutique was open for those who wanted to have a souvenir commemorating their time aboard this wonderful old lady.
Our arrival to Korčula occurred after lunch, and during our late afternoon walk through this enchanting old town we discovered a lot about the island’s history, heritage, and way of life.
The highlight of the afternoon was the moreška, the traditional sword dance that for centuries has been performed by locals on special occasions for their town. Moreška is a dance that was performed in many Mediterranean countries in the past, but today it is preserved only in Korčula.
As the ship remained anchored in front of the island city until late evening, some took advantage of the opportunity to have a local meal in one of Korčula's wonderful restaurants, while others used their time ashore to make a final purchase of the island’s famous red-coral jewelry. As Sea Cloud left the island of Marco Polo late in the evening, the great city of Dubrovnik was waiting for us.
