We entered the busy harbor of Helsinki early this morning, cruising past the famous fortress island of Suomenlinna on our way to a fantastic berth in the heart of downtown. Once National Geographic Explorer was secured alongside, we set out on a day of exploring the area surrounding the city. Some of us visited the beautiful estate of Malmgård. Others rode out to the home of the famed Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen, father of Eero Saarinen, who designed the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and many other famous buildings in the United States.
