Isla Santa Catalina / Isla Carmen

This morning we woke up to calmer seas. The southern winds, which had been following us for the last few days had abated and we were able to make a landing on the beach adjacent to Elephant Rock at Isla Santa Catalina. We spent the morning exploring the island and snorkeling in the warm and clear water. During our hike up the arroyo of the island we encountered two rattleless rattlesnakes. Our hike ended on a high bluff treating us to a fantastic view of the Gulf of California complete with a passing pod of dolphins.

During the afternoon we enjoyed an exciting lecture by Mark and Kyler of the Crittercam crew. They shared the successes and challenges of trying to plant cameras on the backs of some of the most elusive marine animals around the world. The first test deployment with an emperor penguin named Rodney was a favorite story among the guests.

In the late afternoon we made a second landing at Isla Carmen where we enjoyed snorkeling, kayaking, and the thrill of banana boating. And we wrapped up the day with a sighting of Laysan Albatross, the fourth sighting in Baja ever, a Mexican Fiesta and spectacular sunset.
