Petersburg/Frederick Sound, Southeast Alaska

Exceptional is one good word to describe today – but it was so much more. From the warm, sunny weather, to flightseeing over glaciers, a visit to a muskeg and the friendly town of Petersburg, and the late afternoon and evening with cooperative feeding humpback whales, we are overwhelmed and buzzing with emotion and energy. We were taken in by the importance of all Nature – grand and small – plankton, sphagnum moss, water striders, and ripe berries, as well as huge glaciers and charismatic megafauna. Everything is interconnected and we must remember to include ourselves. John Muir once wrote that if you tug on any one thing in nature, you’ll find it attached to everything in the universe. Much of it is beyond our understanding, but it is wonderful to be able to observe the marvels of the natural world and to feel linked to them without interfering. Such experiences are very powerful and rewarding and will stay with us indefinitely.
