Española Island

Every week this island gives us a new surprise. It is nice to come back and see how birds and reptiles interact, and also how they struggle to survive. The dry season is making these animals find different ways to survive. Most of the land birds have to dig deeper to get soft seeds. For some sea birds it hasn’t been easy either. It is sad to see the few blue-footed boobies that didn’t make it in this year. But mortality is part of nature! On the other hand, I was happy to find several healthy baby blue-footed boobies, exercising their wings, getting ready to fly.

At the end of the walk this morning we had the great opportunity to see Galápagos albatrosses doing the ritual courtship dance. It was fun! I also looked this morning for a crazy booby that in the last weeks had been incubating an albatross egg, but it seems that he has finally given up.

In the afternoon we couldn’t resist getting in the water and exploring the underwater world enjoying our time with many different types of fish and playing with some sea lions.

This island gave us an excellent day. The highlight today for me was walking through a place we call the “boobery” and see all the white fluffy babies exercising their wings to someday be able to fly.
