Española Island

The highlight today was to contemplate from a beautiful cliff on Española Island a humpback whale jumping off the water and producing a giant splash. We think that it was swimming together with its calf, and we enjoyed this amazing sighting for several minutes until the big whale dove into the depths of southern Española. The funny part is that we spotted the whale when we were at a point actually known as the blow hole, a very interesting geological formation where waves go through a fissure spouting water up to (sometimes) seventy feet high.

After the whale, we continued walking along the cliff and we encountered a couple of Galápagos albatrosses in the middle of their courting dance. During the courtship they move their heads from side to side, and then point their beaks up into the sky. At the time the bill goes down they shake it, and then you can hear a sound similar to a machine gun, when the upper mandible touches and hits the lower one at fast speed.

In the afternoon we ended up swimming, snorkeling and also relaxing on the beach of Gardner Bay where we enjoyed our time playing and watching Galápagos sea lions.
