Floreana Island

Our early morning visit to the Post Office Barrel gave us the opportunity to use the first mailing station from Ecuador and South America. The traditional hand-delivered system is still pretty efficient. Our guests took postcards from the barrel and left some others to be taken later. Around “La Loberia” in between the bizarre landscape with mangroves, lava, prickly-pear cactus, sea lions were sleeping or playing, and, additionally, sea turtles, a stingray and a penguin were spotted.

In the late morning we had a lot of fun snorkeling and playing with the sea lions on Champion Islet. Nevertheless, on the glass bottom boat they were doing a tourist inspection swimming underneath and around it. Although the Floreana mockingbird has been extinct on the main island for 125 years, nowadays there are only 140 pairs in the whole world, living on Champion Islet and we saw some of them.

At Punta Cormorant in the afternoon we had a great time snorkeling at the greenish beach with sea lions and penguins. As we walked along the brackish lagoon, bright pink flamingos were feeding, calling, and nesting on muddy crater-like structures. The vegetation around the area is unique and related to the sunflower family.

What a fantastic and exciting day we had!
