Española Island
We are in the middle of the blue-footed booby’s nesting season, and today on Española Island we had the opportunity to see these birds on their nests with many chicks of different sizes.
The blue-footed boobies are opportunistic breeders, and that means that they decide to nest whenever they feel that the weather conditions are good for them. The current from the southern hemisphere is coming in strong at this time of the year, bringing rich water with planktonic organisms, making it easy for all these sea birds to find fish and feed their offspring.
All the chicks look very healthy and today we had the great opportunity to see one of them being fed by his father. This chick is about two months old (“twisted beak”, the chick we have been following on the website, was found dead this morning. Natural selection has been at work).
In the afternoon our adventure didn’t finish because we had a great time on the beach watching, and we can also say playing, with the sea lions. It was fun because one sea lion pup about four or five months old started to chase our younger guests, and in turn, the kids didn’t pass up the opportunity to play with him. In the end, they baptized her with the name of Sally.
The adults, parents and grandparents on the other hand enjoyed tremendously watching their kids playing with these amazing and fearless creatures.
