Fernandina Island

Today we visited the western part of the Galápagos Islands. This is one of the most beautiful areas of the archipelago due to the fascinating volcanic landscapes found in these realms. Shield volcanoes, young lava flows and intriguing volcanic formations are admired everywhere.

We started our day early with a circumnavigation of Roca Redonda. This is a very interesting rock located off the northern part of Isabela Island. This rock constitutes the visible tip of a submerged huge volcano. A large number of seabirds make this island their home. Later in the morning we enjoyed a Zodiac ride along the shoreline of Ecuador volcano. During this ride our visitors had great opportunities to observe for the very first time the flightless cormorant. This endemic bird specie is restricted only to this particular part of the archipelago. We also observed several species of sea birds, Galápagos penguins, sea lions and many marine turtles.

In the afternoon we visited what often is deemed as the jewel on the crown of the Galápagos, Fernandina Island. This fabulous island is very special. It is the youngest and is covered mainly by black young lava flows. The variety and abundance of the wildlife that inhabits this paradise is just amazing. What a fantastic day!
