Floreana Island
A visit to Floreana Island implies immersing ourselves in the human history of the Galápagos, however, there is also plenty of wilderness unique to this particular place. Our morning activities began when we decided to pay a visit to the legendary Post Office Barrel, located on the northern coast of the island. This place was visited by early travelers, adventurers and dreamers that wanted to make these islands their home. At some point during our visit we were transported back in time, and we felt as if we were those adventurers landing on a remote island. Picking up and dropping off postcards is the main tradition now a day. We left the island hoping that some day, someone would knock at the door of the person addressed on the postcard and hand-deliver it!
Our after-breakfast outing took us back to the wild side, since our appointment with sea lions for snorkeling couldn’t be postponed. We all were delighted by playful young sea lions riding at the sides of the Zodiacs, and then underwater, since as soon as we jumped in, they joined us in the fun.
Later in the afternoon we couldn’t resist the temptation of trying again, so we went one more time for snorkeling at Devil’s Crown. Rays and sharks were the main attraction here, showing us once again that their behavior is not necessarily link to their looks. Peaceful and graceful animal they are, and we were all admiring those characteristics while we were swimming with them. The afternoon’s snorkeling was combined with a very relaxing walk at Punta Cormorant. We strolled by the large brackish water lagoon found here, admiring some of the pelicans resting on the mangrove trees and one of the most elegant birds of the Galápagos, the greater flamingo, and that put a golden – or better to say a “pinkish” – end to our day.
