Española Island
There are very few places in the world like the island of Española. The amount of species found in every section of the trail is amazing and the biodiversity has no limits.
As soon as we disembarked on the island, guests started to “dance” along the trail to avoid stepping on marine iguanas or sea lions. All the way along the cliff we could se hundreds of blue-footed and Nazca boobies landing and taking off from the cliff.
Soon we encountered the famous geological formation called the blowhole. Its thunder-like sound could be heard miles away and the ocean spray was felt long before we arrive to the area where it could be observed the best. Not too far from the blowhole we found the “albatross airport.” This is a large vegetation-free area where albatross usually perform their five points landing (two wings, two feet and the beak!) It was fun to watch some of the albatross walking to the cliff to perform their jumps heading to the vast sea. These majestic birds are the largest and heaviest sea birds in the Galápagos and certainly one of my favorites to watch during mating rituals. Due to the fact that albatross mate for life, the very coordinated dance is performed for hours before the actual mating occurs. The sounds made by both male and female pulled more than one laugh to our guests. At the end, the albatross mastered their dance and nothing could have been more rewarding than to observe the beginning of true love.
