We spent the morning at the Asa Wright Nature Center, in the Arima Valley located in the northern highlands of Trinidad. We left our home, the Caledonian Star, and spent the early morning hours sitting on the veranda overlooking the Trinidadian rainforest. From this vantage point, we were able to enjoy fabulous and up-close views of Green Honeycreepers (see the inset), white-necked jacobins, bananaquits, blue-crowned motmots, crested oropendulas and many other varieties of birds crowding around the bird feeders.

In addition to the abundant birdlife, we also were treated to visits from agoutis and monitor lizards. After breakfast, we could opt to join hikes through the forest, wander through the grounds on our own or watch the kaleidoscope of species that visit the feeders below the veranda.

The Asa Wright Nature Center lived up to its reputation as a wildlife spectacle unrivaled in the neotropics.
