Floreana was the first island in the Galapagos colonized by humans. Ecuador took possession of the Galapagos Islands in 1832 and established a penal colony on Floreana. When Charles Darwin explored the islands in 1835, Floreana was the second island he visited. During his stay on Floreana, Darwin explored the highlands and met with some of the convicts.
