National Geographic Endurance spent the day exploring the southern reaches of East Greenland. Under some misty drizzle, a combination of Zodiac cruising and kayaking were offered after breakfast. Around us were high cliffs, and ribbons of waterfalls were a strong attraction for the kayakers. Once those operations were finished, the polar plunge was set up. Base camp was filled with cheering, laughing, and shivering guests as we had a good turnout of brave souls take the plunge.
While sailing out of the Skjoldengen fjord system, someone spotted a polar bear walking along the shore! Of course we slowed, and even turned around to get some better views. A strong and healthy bear seemed to be heading in the direction we just came from. While we were careful to keep a respectable distance, everyone on board got good views with binoculars and spotting scopes.
A late afternoon hike prior to dinner gave us a chance to stretch our legs before the ship heads south tonight to the very southern tip of Greenland and through Prince Christian’s Sound.
