It was an early morning in the Drake Passage with calm seas and mild winds, a dream crossing aboard National Geographic Endurance. We were treated to an early morning “fogbow”, the same process of how rainbows form, but the light is refracted through the smaller suspended water droplets in fog which diffuses or mutes the colors.
Because of the calm seas and great visibility throughout the day, we were able to see hundreds of whale blows. Mainly fin and humpback whales were seen in addition to a few unidentifiable, most likely beaked whales.
