Many things were put on hold during the peak of the pandemic, including travel. We reveled today in visiting the deepest reaches of the Pacaya-Samaira National Reserve. We visited areas that our local guides have not had the opportunity to explore in almost three years. We were richly rewarded by sightings of capybaras, brown capuchins, squirrels, Isabel’s sakis, and red howlers. The bird species sighted numbered over three dozen. The weather gave us a reminder that we are in a tropical rainforest, as the skies dumped a cleansing rain on us and everything else as we made our way back to Delfin II. It was an awesome experience of the sounds, sights, and smells of the rainforest.

Pahuachiro, Nauta, and Yarapa
Today we enjoyed another great day of exploration in the Peruvian Amazon, starting before breakfast at Pahuachiro, a small tributary of the Marañon River, followed by Nauta Creek, and then the Yarapa River in the afternoon. Great wildlife sightings and nice weather marked our second full day in the mightiest tropical rainforest on Earth.

Delfin II
Yanayaquillo, San Regis, and Yanayacu-Pucate
The Upper Amazon is a wonderful place to explore, and today was our first full day here on board Delfin II. We learned about the river’s dynamics, now that the level of the Amazon is at its highest level. We also got to join in a ceremony with Carola, a local medicine woman. Today we also had our first skiff rides along some of the tributaries of the Marañon River. We had our first encounters with pink river dolphins, saddleback tamarins, squirrel monkeys, and even poison dart frogs and ringed kingfishers.
