Today we returned to Canada, this time to explore Cape Breton Island in the northeast corner of Nova Scotia. We ventured out shortly after breakfast to spend the day off the ship to explore some of the region’s modern history and culture. Our morning was filled with a visit to the Fortress of Louisbourg to offer insight into 18th century colonial life, including a demonstration of the life of a soldier and a deliciously warming and perfectly spiced hot chocolate recipe.

After travelling to Baddeck for lunch, we were able to take advantage of the glorious conditions on the water for a boat tour which offered fantastic views of bald eagles and a visit to the Alexander Graham Bell Museum.

As we returned to National Geographic Explorer, we were treated to an extended cocktail hour and performance of local music by the Beaton sisters, hosted by our onboard ethnomusicologist, Jacob Edgar.
