There are many wonderful sights to behold in Africa. The wildlife is extraordinary, the landscapes are beautiful, and the human history makes a compelling story. One aspect of the present-day culture that interests many people is the children of Africa. Disease, famine, poverty, and war are synonymous with the continent of Africa in the 20th and 21st  centuries. While those disruptive forces have affected many millions of Africans, the children who have survived are amazing. On our expedition along the coast of Africa we will make several stops at schools. Many of our guests have brought school supplies to help make the learning environment for the children we meet just a little better. The program began last year and we have expanded it for this year.

A large amount (over 100 lbs) of the supplies came all the way from Sparks, Nevada where three school-age sisters named Jordan, Olivia and Cadence wanted to help kids they had never met from a far-away land. They enlisted their fellow classmates to help purchase and then send paper, pencils, pens, glue, scissors, rulers, paintbrushes, notebooks, crayons and binders to National Geographic Explorer. This gesture of hope, purchased by children for children, was on the staffs’ minds, and they felt like Santa’s helpers while they divided up the large amount of goods into equal lots for the schools we will visit.

Our guests will be enriched by their visit to these schools and we hope that the children enjoy the supplies as they continue their journey of education.
