National Geographic Sea Bird arrived at Pier 2 in Astoria, Oregon, about 6:00 a.m. After breakfast and a briefing for the day, our two groups proceeded to explore the Columbia River Maritime Museum and Cape Disappointment. With pleasant weather and minimal rain, the views of the Columbia River jetties were magnificent; the high surf warning produced rollers and significant breakers at Waikiki Beach for our views of the Cape Disappointment lighthouse.

Downtown events included the 1811 site of Fort Astoria, hundreds of sea lions lounging on abandoned docks, the maritime museum, lightship Columbia, and the United States Coast Guard Cutter Florence Finch.
