Stephenie Ambrose Tubbs
Stephenie Ambrose Tubbs is the author of The Lewis and Clark Companion and Why Sacagawea Deserves the Day Off, along with numerous articles and books on western history. The daughter of late historian and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Stephen Ambrose—author of Undaunted Courage the renowned chronicle of the Lewis and Clark Expedition—Stephenie literally grew up on the Lewis and Clark Trail.
Her passion for conservation and resource preservation has also sparked her ongoing involvement in the American Prairie Reserve and the Montana Preservation Alliance. During the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition (2003-2006), she travelled the entire trail, speaking about the experiences and the legacy of the Corps of Discovery.
As President of the newly formed Lewis and Clark Trust, Ambrose Tubbs wants to use technology and inspire teachers to share the value of historic places with students and the American public. Part of that effort includes expanding the “Trail” to include places Lewis visited before and after departing St. Louis for the new American West.
According to Ambrose Tubbs, we are at a crossroads. If we are unable to convey the value of historic places, National Parks, and National Historic Trails to the next generation, all of the generations after them will lose. “We need to plant the seed in their minds that these places belong to them, that they must help to take care of them, and that they must be sure to teach their children the same thing.”
