Bob Gatten

Dr. Robert Gatten is Emeritus Professor of Biology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in animal physiology.  He has published over 50 articles and book chapters on the physiology of exercise, diving, hibernation, and food processing.  He served as Head of the Department of Biology and as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences over a period of 16 years.  He taught a freshman seminar on the expedition of Lewis and Clark.

Dr. Gatten served as President of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation from 1994 until 1996, and was one of three founders of the National Council of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial in 1993.  He located the birthplace of Expedition Co-Captain William Clark in Caroline County, Virginia.  Dr. Gatten helped establish the Home Front Chapter of the Lewis and Clark Trail Foundation in Charlottesville, Virginia, and was the founding President of the Carolina Chapter of the Foundation.  He served on the Board of Directors of the Lewis and Clark Exploratory Center of Virginia, in Charlottesville.
